Principal’s Report

With only 2 weeks until the end of term there is a lot happening at school. To complete the first semester all students’ reports are being finalised so they can be distributed on Wednesday 28 June.

Junior Band performance at Manly Vale Kindergarten

Tuesday 6 June our junior band performed for the children at Manly Vale Kindergarten. For some it was a trip down memory lane remembering their time at preschool. All band members enjoyed performing a variety of new pieces and some solo numbers to show the children how their instrument works. All band members enjoyed the experience. Thank you to Ms Stacey and Ms Phillips for accompanying the band and to Gergely our conductor for leading the performance. This was a great lead up to their performance for the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival at Pittwater High school tonight at 4.30pm. Good luck to both the senior and junior band on their performances tonight.

P & C Trivia night - Saturday 17 June

This Saturday night all parents and teachers are invited to attend the “Aussie Icons” Trivia night. The event will be held at Mackellar Girls Campus Hall at 7.00pm. The night is a lot of fun and great prizes and hampers will be up for auction. One of the major auction items is the opportunity to allow your child to be “Principal for the Day.” This auction item allows a student to sit in the principal’s seat for the day and participating in duties including attending assemblies, handing out awards, visiting classrooms and enjoying morning tea with the executive team. Other prize items include homework passes, hampers and a cricket bat signed by Mark Taylor. It is always a lot of fun and a great opportunity to raise funds for the school and meet new people. A big thank you to Penny Dixon (parent) and her fundraising team for all the work and preparation they have done in the lead up to this event. Thank you to everyone who has donated items for the class hampers and given up their time to work on props for the night.

Dance Concert – Tuesday 27 June

Our annual K-2 and 3-6 Dance concert will be at Balgowlah Boys Campus hall on Tuesday 27 June with a dress rehearsal the day before on Monday 26 June. The theme for the concerts are; K-2 “Fairy Tales” starting at 9.30am and 3-6 “Myths and Legends” starting at 11.00am. Mrs Lyn Orrick our dance teacher has been preparing all classes for their debut performances. It should be a fantastic concert. Front row tickets are being auctioned at our Trivia night this Saturday 17 June.

Dance sport - Year 5

Every Friday our year 5 students participate in a ballroom dancing program. They have already mastered the Cha Cha and Tango and their teachers Ms Fisk and Mrs Fraser have enjoyed watching them grow in confidence and maturity through the experience. The best 30 coupled will represent the school in the Dancesport challenge on October 24 of this year. This is a new program introduced this year.

School Dance Ensembles - Glen Street Theatre

Our boys’ and girls’ dance ensembles will be performing at Glen Street Theatre as part of the Sydney North Dance Festival. Our dance ensembles are to perform on Wednesday 21 June at 7.30pm and Sunday 25 June at 5.00pm. Our girls’ ensemble will perform “Bridging the Gap” with our boys’ ensemble to perform “There’s No Stopping Us.” We wish them all the best for their performances and thank Ms Panetta for her choreography, and Ms Durazza for her support and organisation of the buses and routines required to attend the performances. Both dance groups will also perform at our school dance concert on Tuesday 27 June.

School Disco - Thursday 22 June

The theme for our dress up school disco is “Movie Characters.” All students are invited to attend and all money raised will go towards the year 6 students buying a gift to give to the school. Other funds raised will also contribute to their end of year graduation night. The cost of the disco is $12 and this will cover entry, cost of the DJ, chips and drink. The disco is supervised by the teachers and organised and run by our year 6 students. It is always a fabulous night and a lot of fun for the students. Times for the disco are below:

K-2 children - 5.30pm – 7.00pm
3-6 children - 7.10pm - 8.40pm

Only Manly Vale Public School students are invited to attend and prompt pick up of students is appreciated at the end of their session. If your child will be going home with another child’s parent please send a written note into your child’s teacher beforehand or on the night.

Best Wishes Ms Fisk

We would like to wish Ms Sally Fisk and her partner Adriano all the best for the impending birth of their first child. Ms Fisk completed her time of 5F last Friday. Mr David Chapman will be on year 5 for the rest of the term.

Ken has been at Manly Vale Public School for many years looking after the grounds and maintenance. Ken looks forward to having more time to play golf at his favourite course Long Reef. As a community we would like to thank and acknowledge all the years of service Ken has given to the school and wish him a very long and happy retirement.

ICAS UNSW Competitions

All after school competitions have now been completed. Thank you to Mrs Lee, Mrs O’Grady and Mrs Banham for help administering the after school competitions. Certificates will arrive shortly and will be handed out during Friday morning assemblies. Names and dates of the presentations will be printed in the newsletter prior. Multicultural Public Speaking Competition

The Multicultural Public Speaking competition is a new initiative through our gifted and talented program at school and was organised by Mrs Humphreys and Mrs Banham. On Friday the stage 3 finalists presented a prepared and impromptu speech at the 3-6 assembly. Congratulations to all students who were invited to enter the competition. The four finalists; Isaac, Sarah, Himaal and Ophelia presented outstanding speeches and demonstrated their excellent public speaking skills. Ophelia and Sarah were announced as the two students who will be presenting their speeches at the local finals at Collaroy on 28 June where students from other local public schools will also compete. We wish the girls the very best of luck. The stage 2 school speak-off is on Monday of week 9.

In round 5 of the NSW Junior Chess League, Manly Vale B travelled to Oxford Falls Grammar to compete against some experienced players.

Manly Vale B (Adam Turner, Max Mako, Alex Matheson & Milo Wolf-Daffy) were outplayed 4-0 with all boys showing great sportsmanship throughout a tough match.

Special mention to Tracy (Milo’s Mum) for taking the team to and from Oxford Falls.

Science with Peter Macinnis

Last week each Stage 1 class went on a bush walk incursion with Peter Macinnis. 2B reflected on the experience and here are some of their responses:

‘Last week we went on a bush walk with Peter our scientist. I learnt that there's a plant and that when an insect lands on this plant it curves up on the insect. I also learnt that tadpoles don't have a lot of space to swim there. I learnt that you put rocks to stop water going on its journey. I think Peter is very interesting in what he says!’ Lucas G

‘We went on a bush walk and I learnt that when tadpoles don't have that much water and it dries up, the tadpoles die. So Peter put some water in. Peter put some rocks on this sandy path because if water goes on the sand it will wash away the sand. This bug catching plant curves when a bug lands on it and it takes hours to open.’ Oliver

‘We saw some rocks and some were sharp. That was stop 2. We saw some tadpoles that were really squished because there wasn't much water. That was our last stop. I saw some moss, which can get very slippery if it goes under the water. Peter is a very fascinating scientist.’ Mason

‘Last week we went on a bush walk. I learnt that some tadpoles need more water. I liked when we saw the bug catcher [plant] because when you put your finger in them your finger gets wet. I like how Peter is very smart.’ Charli

‘Last week we went on a bush walk with Peter, our scientist. The spider flower was pink. The beard flowers were white. I saw some tadpoles. We used magnifying glasses.’ Pietro

‘I liked the tadpoles and flowers. It was interesting and fascinating. Peter talked about the flowers and plants. My favourite part was when I found the very rare flower. My partner was Ava. We were the last people in the line.’ Cleo

‘Last week I went on a bushwalk with Peter. My mum was a manager. Peter was very fascinating. He told us stories about plants.’ Isla

Stage 2 Science

Stage 2 is exploring a fascinating world of different types of materials this term.

Students were busy testing weather materials leak or repel water; snap or stretch… it was concluded that the best material for a raincoat is the one that repels rather than the one that soaks up the water. Well, that would make sense!

This was not enough for our Stage 2 Brain Trust. We decided to pose and test a tricky question, such as ‘How strong is a sheet of paper?’ The goal was to build a structure that would support a science journal to begin with and then novels, encyclopaedias, atlases, etc. A book had to be elevated to at least 10cm off the surface. Allowable materials were paper, scissors and sticky type.

Students were buzzing with excitement and creativity. They were discussing their ideas, testing them, failing, adjusting, retesting, failing again, adjusting, retesting… and above all cheering for one another! Some designs were astonishing in their simplicity and some in their elaboration. Each group faced various unexpected problems, such as; a tower of books would actually squash the paper base compromising the required 10cm space! Here is how some of the groups solved the problem.

Scientist Visit to Stage 3

During the last two weeks stage 3 have been lucky to have 2 visits from our "in house" Scientist Peter Macinnes. He spoke to the children in detail about STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) and how it relates to so many aspects (nearly everything!!) in our daily lives...

It was a unique experience to hear a passionate and engaging Scientist share his knowledge and opinions.

Some of the topics the children enjoyed in particular were:

  • Ancient methods of Printing and Time Keeping
  • The Aboriginies and Constellations
  • Historical methods of measuring Time and Angles
  • Important Work of some Early Scientists including Copernicus and Galileo Galilei
  • Number Systems including the Mayan system and base 36
  • Rudyard Kipling (the author) and his "Just So" stories
  • The Solar System

We look forward to more visits in term 3!

THANKS Peter!

Dear Families,

Thank you to all the families that attended our community meeting on 18 May, we had some great responses and feedback!

At before and after school care we have been discussing our sustainability topic for this term with the children, working to come up with ways that we can help MVOSHC and our community is more sustainable, and protect our local habitats. We have some very creative and clever ideas from the children, who have been focused on habitat loss and thinking about building some new homes for our native animals. We are excited to follow them through to the next phase of the project and putting our ideas into place!

We have now sent out our vacation care program for the upcoming holidays, we are very excited about the incursions and excursions we will be doing, such as our excursion to North Head for EcoXplore and a bushwalk, or our Kaleidoscope Science incursion! Enrolment and bookings for vacation care are available now, with the program and instructions on how to book are online at the link below:
