Principal’s Report
Congratulations to Mackenzie Jeffs and Lucy Scholtens who managed to run in the first 6 places in their Zone Cross country event. A tremendous effort from both girls who will now go on to compete in the Regional Cross Country in Gosford on Friday 9 June. Pippi Te Pania also came 7th which means she will be a reserve for the event. Congratulations to all our 47 Manly Vale students who competed at the Zone Cross country carnival and to Ms Fisk and Mr Dylan who accompanied the team and organised the event. As usual the behaviour and sportsmanship of our school team received recognition on the day.
Kindergarten Open day – Tuesday 30 May
Last Tuesday we hosted close to 60 new parents who were looking at Manly Vale Public School as the school for their children next year. The parents were entertained by our senior band, choir and dance ensembles with Kindergarten 2017 singing a song to conclude the day. Our school leaders conducted tours of the school and answered questions from our new and interested parents. Thank you to all the leaders, our Kindergarten students and teachers, Ms Panetta and the dance groups, Mrs McManus, Mrs Lucey and the choir, and Ms Phillips, Mr Dylan and Ms Fisk for their behind the scenes organisation. All our visitors enjoyed the day. The Kindergarten orientation program will begin on Monday 11 September. Enrolment forms are available from the office.
Stage 2 Field of Mars Incursion
This week and next our year 3 & 4 students will be participating in some environmental workshops with the team from Field of Mars. Bushwalking, photography and environmental observations and drawings will be done to further enhance the study of their local area as part of their geography unit of work.
Drama Group
Today our school drama group, Santiago Barrios Rincon, Dakota Birch, Phoebe Crowe, Morgan Andrews, Josh Slatter and Matilda Graham auditioned for the NSW Festival of Drama with their skit titled “Balancing Act.” Ms Jaala Kemp is the writer, producer and director of the item and has experienced great success in the last few years at these drama festivals. The team will hear within the next few weeks if they have been successful in their audition. Congratulations to all our actors! Matildas Graham is also to be congratulated for her debut television role in “Janet King” last Thursday night on the ABC.
Working with Peter Macinnis- author, botanist, university mentor
Manly Vale Public School as part of their Higher Order Thinking (HOT) programs has once again managed to secure Peter Macinnis to run workshops, mentor teachers and conduct bushwalks on our local environment. Peter Macinnis brings a wealth of knowledge and experience transforming the way we engage with our local bushland. This week, Ms Macinnis has worked with years 1 & 2 classes during their science lessons, and will give a talk to our year 6 students tomorrow. Next week our year 5 students will work with him during science. Thank you to our science teachers Mrs Cash, Mrs Morrison and Mrs Tams for making science relevant and engaging for all our students, and to Mrs Banham who organised these incursions for our students as part of her role as leader of the HOT programs.
Debating
Monday 22 May our year 5 & 6 debating teams attended a workshop at Mowbray Public School as part of the Arts Unit programs. The students learnt about the differing techniques to use when presenting arguments and delivering rebuttals. The students were given feedback and appraisals on their presentations and worked on their public speaking skills. They all had an amazing experience and learnt a lot from the day. Thank you to Mrs Humphreys and Ms Caruso for their work with our teams.

Ryka Ali an aboriginal performer, artist, dancer and story teller will entertain all our students next Wednesday 7 June in our school hall. The performance will compliment work done by all classes on aboriginal culture and studies. We are very lucky to host such a professional performance at our school. Cost for this event was included in the whole school fees at the beginning of the year.

75th Anniversary Commemorative Service
It was a pleasure and honour to accompany our four School Captains and Vice Captains to the 75th Anniversary Commemorative Service hosted by the Honourable Tony Abbott MP (Member for Warringah) at North Head on Friday 26 May. The leaders, Sonny Harper, Sienna Kelly, Ben Crowe and Grace Nairne, listened to guest speaker Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin (AC Chief of the Defence Force) present about the night war came to Sydney Harbour. Sonny and Sienna laid some rosemary and two books at the foot of the monument. Our leaders were understanding of the solemn nature of this event and were sensible and respectful. They looked lovely in their red blazers and represented our school beautifully.

Band
The senior and junior bands provided excellent entertainment as they performed at our last two assemblies. Both bands had shown great improvements after attending the band workshop mornings and it was fabulous to showcase them to the whole school. On behalf of the school and band committee I’d like to thank Ms Sally Fisk who has done so much work with the band and ensures they are prepared and organised for every event. Thank you also to Ben and Gergely, our two extraordinary conductors, who came to conduct for the performances. Band Camp notes will be sent home next week.
ICAS Competitions
The Science NSW ICAS Competition was held on Tuesday after school. The next competitions to take place are writing on Tuesday 13 June and Spelling Wednesday 14 June. A note outlining all the details for both competitions will be sent home next week. Please ensure your child/ren know they are sitting the competitions as there are no make-up times for those who don’t attend the scheduled afternoon. Students in stages 2 and 3 will be sitting the English Competition (1 August) and the Mathematics Competition (15 August) in school time.

National Simultaneous Story Time
This week the kindergarten through to year two students enjoyed a presentation of “The Cow Tripped over the Moon”, by Tony Wilson and Laura Wood.
The story was re-worked as a readers’ theatre script and performed by the teachers for the children.
The well-known nursery rhyme, Hey diddle diddle, had been re-produced by Tony Wilson in a picture book format with some interesting additions.
There were many silly antics by the various characters, played by the teachers.
Who can forget Ms Sussanna and her amazing leaps and bounds, Miss Panetta and her prowess with the violin, and Mr Bennett and his ‘doggy’ ways!
The rest of the teachers played their parts with great finesse.
The cow was determined to jump over the moon and after several false starts, she was launched into space like a rocket
The performance was well received by the audience who joined in a whole group sing along of “Hey diddle diddle”.

Guringai Festival
The Guringai Festival is a local annual festival that aims at raising the awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in our local region. The festival starts on Sorry Day, 26 May and continues through Reconciliation Week (27 May - 3 June) until NAIDOC Week, the second week in July each year.
This year’s theme is Connections, inviting people of all ages to connect and participate in events across the region. The festival promotes intergenerational conversations, activities and perspectives, and the ability to connect and shape our future, being inclusive of all.
Numerous reconciliation and community groups are involved, including local Councils. There are many events in our local area (most of which are free), including: storytelling, art and photography exhibitions, talks involving learning about local Aboriginal heritage and culture in our local environment, music, movie screenings, art and craft activities, and Sorry Day commemorations.
Manly Vale Public School will be discussing Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week in class over the next two weeks, culminating with an incursion by performer Ryka Ali and commemorating NAIDOC Week later in the term.

Zone Cross Country
Last Wednesday Manly Vale competed at the zone carnival for cross country. Spirits were high and all students put in 100%. It was wonderful to see so many parents attend and cheer on our runners. The top 6 finishers from each age group qualified for the regional cross country to be held in Gosford on Friday 9 June. An extra big congratulations to Mackenzie Jeffs (3/4W) and Lucy Scholtens (5F) who will be representing the Sydney North team at this event after finishing 5th and 6th in their respective races.

A message from Jenny Atkinson, P&C President:
A big thank you to all the volunteers who supported a tremendous turn out for Mother’s Day. From the logistics and comms team to the egg and bacon crew, the year 6 students on the cup pick-up table, the photo lab to the tables covered in flowers and the choir. It was a great chance to see the children’s classrooms and the rain managed to hold off. Just under 400 egg and bacon rolls and 200 coffees were served with smiles.
The main purpose was a chance for the school community to connect and enjoy the morning. In the past 2 years nearly 160 new children and their parents have joined our school.
A special call out to the Penny, Inessa, Peta, Ian and the team of smiling volunteers who all made the morning such a success.
Once again a big thank you and we look forward to Trivia Night on 17 June “Australian Icons,” it's going to be a cracker!
The next P&C meeting is Tuesday13 June 2017 at 7.00pm, all welcome.
