Principal’s Report
Welcome back to term 2. Our week began with the Staff Development day on Monday where our teachers joined other local teachers from the Northern Beaches Learning Alliance (13 local schools) to listen to some motivating speakers on educational reforms and practice. More information on the day follows later in this newsletter.
ANZAC Day Service
Our ANZAC day service was organised by Mr Guzman this year and our school leaders hosted a very moving and respectful service last Wednesday. The Last Post was played and the flag raised and lowered to commemorate all those who lost their lives in the various wars. Thank you to all the children who brought in flowers to be laid below the flag pole. It was our first main K-6 assembly and all students were very well behaved.
Sydney North Dance Auditions
Congratulations to our Boys’ Ensemble and Girls’ Dance group on their outstanding behaviour whilst auditioning for the Sydney North Dance Festival. The judges and organisers were very impressed with the standard of performance but particularly commented on the Manly Vale students’ excellent behaviour on the day. Well done Ms Panetta and the dancers!
School Fees due - Fee Raffle – this Friday 5 May
Thank you to all the families who have paid their school fees for the year. This money goes towards the basic resources required for our students in their classrooms and participation in various excursions and incursions that will take place throughout the year. It is important that the whole school contribution is paid as this covers the costs of books, learning materials and software licenses used in class and at home as well as various extra-curricular activities.
If you have paid your fees in full then your name will be placed in a draw for a family movie pass. The draw will be conducted this Friday at the 9.00am in the morning assembly.
Term 2 reminders will be sent home next week.
PSSA - Winter
The winter PSSA sports include:
Boys Soccer- coached by Ms Lisa
Cash and Ms Emily Sussanna
Girls Soccer- coached by Ms Rosie Caruso and Ms
Jaala Kemp
Girls Netball- coached by Mrs Sarah
Humphreys
Boys Rugby League- coached by Mr Guzman.
All students who weren’t selected for PSSA teams will participate in a home sport programs covering basketball, newcombeball, netball and athletics skills. Please ensure that your child has a hat and drink bottle for Friday and has returned all permission notes and code of conduct forms (PSSA only). All PSSA students should wear the school sports uniform including football socks on Friday and bring the correct protective gear including shin pads (soccer) and mouth guards (rugby league). Good luck to all our teams this Friday.
New soccer shirts and shorts should arrive this Thursday and will be distributed to teams as they arrive. If the shirts and shorts have not arrived please just wear normal sports uniform for this week.
The season draw for all PSSA sports follows in this newsletter.
NAPLAN – 9 May, 10 May, 11 May
Next week our year 3 & 5 students will sit the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests. The tests take place over the 3 days (see timetable below). If your child misses one of the days then the test will be caught up on another day. The final day that students can sit any of the tests is Friday 12 May. All papers are mailed in for marking on this afternoon.
Tuesday 9 May |
Language Conventions (40 mins) Writing (40 mins) |
Wednesday 10 May |
Reading (Year 3 -45 mins, Year 5 – 50 mins) |
Thursday 11 May |
Numeracy ( Year 3- 45-mins, Year 5 – 50 mins) |

Catch up day |
Please ensure that you child comes to school on time during this testing week and has an early night in preparation for these tests. Please remember that these assessments are just one of the many forms of assessment, teachers use. Please treat these days as normal school routine days, over preparation for these tests can lead to anxiety for children and is not encouraged. The year 3 and 5 teachers have made sure that our students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate guidance and support throughout the week. The best way you as a parent can support your child is by reassuring them that the tests are just part of the whole school program and urge them to just do the best they can on the day. For more information please visit the ACARA website below:

Combined Staff Development Day
On Monday 24 April all of our staff attended the Northern Beaches Learning Alliance Combined Staff Development Day with teachers from 13 schools in our network. Dan Haesler, the motivational keynote speaker spoke about ‘Growth Mindset’ and shared the work of Professor Carol Dweck (Psychology at Stanford University). I have shared the link below as there is a fantastic Ted Talk on Growth Mindset and some fantastic resources and research for teachers and parents. From the Mindset website on the new psychology of success, “Teaching a growth mindset creates motivation and productivity in the worlds of business, education, and sports.”

If your child is going to apply an ‘intention to apply’ form should have been returned to school and an information booklet will have been sent home. All applicants need to apply online but the school also has to submit assessment results and needs a record of who is applying. The application site closes on Friday 12 May. If you are unsure if your child should apply please see your teacher or myself for advice.

ANZAC Service 2017
Thank you to all our visitors and students of Manly Vale Public School for attending our 2017 school ANZAC Service on Wednesday 26 April. The students conducted themselves with dignity listening to the proud history and legacy of our ANZACs as spoken by our school leaders and our Principal Mrs Lee.
A warm thanks also to all the parents and students for their kind contributions of posies and flowers to dedicate to our defence forces during our Anzac Service. We appreciate your generosity and were overwhelmed by your response to our request.
Next year, we will be considering a gold coin donation as an alternative to floral contributions to possibly donate to the charity of the Returned and Services League of Australia.
Mrs Tina Lee (Principal) and Mr Christian Guzman (Coordinator)

Dear Families,
We hope you had a wonderful, restful time during the holidays and a lovely Easter. We had a lovely vacation care program for the children this term and the groups had a good time. You would have received a survey via email last week for you to review and provide us with feedback from this vacation care period. This greatly helps us to make further improvements and extend our programs for the next holiday period.
The activity the children enjoyed the most was our incursion, Bricks for Kids, who visited the centre and brought with them mountains of Lego blocks. This was so much fun as the children got to extend their learning through building and using their imagination. We also spent time in South America where we learned to count in Spanish, salsa dance and we made delicious cheesy empanadas. The Easter Extravaganza was also lots of fun, the children loved exploring different activities which surrounded the holiday period.
We hope to see you all very soon
From the Manly Vale OSHC Team.
