Principal’s Report
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Manly Vale Public School for 2017 as Mrs Lee is on leave and I relieve in the position of Principal. Thank you for the smooth start to the year already and I particularly would like to congratulate our 90 kindergarten students and their parents for such a calm and positive transition to ‘big school’. Commencing Monday 13 February, all kindergarten students will start school at 9:00am and finish at 3:00pm. They may arrive from 8:40-9:00am and will need to leave their bag on their bag hook and go straight to the back playground and play on the basketball court. Please ensure you are doing a safe and efficient drop off as parking is limited and in the afternoons please leave the school grounds soon after the bell as this is not a time for students to be playing. The change at the beginning of the year can be unsettling for some but your patience as a school community has been much appreciated.
Weather Conditions & Safety
We have been experiencing extremely humid and hot weather conditions. Please be aware all classrooms are air-conditioned and classroom teachers are allowing students to put their water bottles in the classrooms and drink when they require. At the same time students are asked to play quiet games in the shade when outside and must wear their hat and sunscreen and have their refillable water bottle. Please remind your child to do these things when you drop them off to school and ensure they have sunscreen applied before leaving home. Roll-on sunscreen is an excellent option to place in younger students’ bags and your help in teaching them to apply it is welcome. PSSA coaches and grades have communal sunscreen available for students to apply themselves.

Parent Information Evenings
Each stage team of teachers will be having a planning day to coordinate excursions, collaboratively program and develop the year’s overview and each term’s learning sequence. On the following evenings teachers will be presenting at their Parent Information evenings:
Stage 3 (years 5 & 6)
Thursday 9 Feb (tonight)
Early Stage 1 (kindy)
Monday 13 Feb
Stage 2 (years 3 &
4) Tuesday 14 Feb
Stage 1 (years 1 & 2) Tuesday 21 Feb
All information evenings will start at 6.00pm and go for approximately 60 minutes.
You will have an opportunity to meet your child/ren’s teacher/s face to face and ask any questions pertinent to the cohort. Teachers will share class, grade and stage expectations and routines with you. Teachers and students will spend the next few weeks settling into their classes and new environments so please keep interruptions to a minimum. There will be formal parent teacher interviews at the end of term in weeks 10 and 11. If you must meet with teachers prior please make appointments through the front office or via a note.
Class Coordinators 2017
At our stage Parent Information nights, teachers will be asking for a Class Coordinator (CC) to volunteer for the year. This person creates a link between the classroom teacher, the P&C and the class parents if ‘tasks’ need completing or information needs disseminating. The CC’s first job is to create a class contact list to use for communication purposes regarding school events. Once the Parent Information nights are completed a Class Coordinator meeting will take place. The CC role is a great way to be involved in the school, to meet new people and to be an integral part of the school’s organisation.
Swimming Carnival
Of course it decided to rain on our annual swimming carnival but that didn’t stop it being a wonderful success and all competitors did their very best. The Manly Vale spirit was strong as we waited for the lightning to dissipate and the carnival went indoors thanks to Mr Colwell! Congratulations to Mrs Melinda Ward, Mr Pat Dylan and Mrs Sarah Birrell and the committee of teachers for organising such a fabulous day for our school. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to help and to those who came to spectate and support. Thank you especially to the staff who worked so hard in the rain and heat and to Adriano and Brandon who supplied the staff with refreshments. We wish all the competitors who made it to the zone carnival the very best for their next races and their opportunity to represent the school.
Congratulations and a huge thank you to our new House Captains and House Vice Captains for also helping to make our carnival such a success. These following students will receive their badges on Friday at the lines assembly at 9:00am.
Hunter (green): House Captains
– Tilly Martyn & Ben Sullivan
House Vice Captains – Georgie Fullarton & Andy Yang
King (yellow): House Captains
– Nora Gado & Gregory John
House Vice Captains – Lara Wiggs & Ethan Howitt-Dudman
Macquarie (red): House Captains

House Vice Captains – Ariel McLaughlin & Jonathon Levingstone
Phillip (blue): House Captains

House Vice Captains – Maiya Dean & Brandon Shapter
PSSA Trials
PSSA trials have started and will continue tomorrow for PSSA summer teams. This is an extension program for sport and not every student who tries out will be put on a team. We have to consider staff and student ratios when making teams and appreciate your understanding. Please discuss this with your child and encourage them to try out with the understanding that not everybody will make a team. Our ‘Home School Sport’ program will have specific activities organised that will focus on developing students’ fundamental movement skills and understanding of games. This will follow a specific program for the students not attending PSSA.
First 2017 P&C Meeting
On Tuesday night the P&C met for the first time this year and had a very productive meeting. I would like to thank Jenny Atkinson for running such an informative and organised meeting and thank all the parents who presented and attended. When Mrs Lee returns she will form budgets with spending priorities based on the school’s targets and needs. Our P&C is always a huge strength with fundraising and supporting, financially and physically, the initiatives of the school. I would like to also acknowledge and thank the parents who have been volunteering in the uniform shop to be ready for the beginning of the year sales and to the canteen helpers already rostered. If you are interested in helping in the canteen please see Sarah Langley.
The uniform shop has a new procedure in place. Orders will be delivered directly to classrooms by students and parents on Friday mornings from now on.
Ian Hills (father of Sarah year 6 & Ryan) came in during the holidays and sanded and varnished the tables outside the canteen area. Thank you Ian for your dedication and care of our school. We really appreciate your time and effort.
Brainstorm Productions – Anti-Bullying Workshop
Mrs Lee organised for Brainstorm Productions to deliver their anti-bullying workshops to the school last Thursday. This was a great way to remind students that bullying is not tolerated at Manly Vale and for students to understand their obligations as bystanders if they witness bullying. Our anti-bullying policy has been updated to coincide with the launch of our new school expectations that the students will also be learning about early this term, payment will be part of the Whole School Program.
Stage 3 Surf Education & Year 5 CARES Bike Education
Thank you Ms Cash for organising two fantastic excursions straight away to link with particular stage 3 personal development, health & physical education outcomes. All stage 3 students listened to an engaging surf education presentation and are following it up with the practical experience on Manly Beach on Thursday. This is a great excursion as the students learn how to ‘read’ the surf for rips and dangers and learn to body surf & board surf. Today year 5 attended CARES which is an excursion focused on bicycle education. The students learnt about bike safety, road rules and bike skills presented by the Police Constables running CARES. We would love to encourage more of our older students to ride to and from school, as this is a way to stay fit, be independent and environmentally friendly. Mr Dylan can issue students with a bike licence.
Humphreys Stationery Packs
Thank you to all the families who ordered stationery packs through Humphreys. This was our biggest year of orders and Humphreys donates a percentage of sales back to use so we can purchase art resources for the classrooms and special projects. If you did not purchase a pack from Humphreys you still can or alternatively you should have purchased all of the grade stationery items listed and these should have been brought to school for your child to start work.
China Study Tour
Mrs Lee has organised a China Study Tour to visit our school in March. This is a very exciting opportunity to make international links with another school and share cultural similarities and differences. A note will be coming home explaining the 10 day experience and itinerary. We will need host families of year 4 & 5 students to volunteer to host a student or two for the 10 day period. They will also need to be available for an information night and the weekend of the 10 days to do some group activities. Mrs Abrahams and Miss Phillips will also be helping organise the China Study Tour.
Scripture, Ethics, Dance, Gymnastics & Swedish School
Next Wednesday 15 Feb scripture and ethics classes will be starting. Thank you Mrs Poole and teachers for volunteering your time to teach scripture and ethics each Wednesday. I would also like to welcome back Mrs Lyn Orrick our dance teacher and Mr Rumen Marinov our gym instructor who are starting classes next week too. Our partnership with the Swedish School will be continuing this year and will also start back after school on Wednesday 15 Feb.
On behalf of the school community I would like to congratulate David Bobadilla from our Manly Vale OSHC Centre for being promoted to the roll of Regional Manager. It has been a pleasure to work with David as he is always professional, cheerful and highly organised. We welcome certified supervisor Romina Araya-Herrera to the position as Centre Coordinator and congratulate her on this promotion. Romina has extensive experience as an Early Childhood Educator and Director and we are very happy she is leading our OSHC Centre.
Lastly, there are many notes being sent home at the beginning of the year. Please be vigilent in checking bags for notes and responding as soon as possible. If you have queries contact the school office or classroom teacher via email. Thank you.

Graduation Speech by Logan Sengchanh
Term 1 started off great as we all were fresh from the holidays. Early in the term we were discovering Antartica and went on a very interesting excursion to the Maritime Museum in the city. We learnt about Shackleton’s exploration in Antartica and watched a documentary about it in the IMAX Theatre. It was very early in the year when most of us realised we were now at the peak of primary school. We also went on an excursion to the Kakoda Track where we walked around with war veterans who fought in the real Kakoda Track in Papua New Guinea. Katia and I said a pledge about the war and we all sang the National Anthem – Advance Australia Fair. A bit after that was our very last swimming carnival which was fun and exciting. We had many people represent our school in district swimming and Olivia and Mali both made it to regionals then went to State level! We had an amazing excursion at bike education learning about road safety. We watched videos, did challenges and even got to ride around the miniature roads and went through traffic lights and intersections as well as roundabouts and cul-de-sacs. Leadership camp was a memorable camp for the 8 leaders as we met other leaders from different schools. One great activity was when we had to carry specific people up a very steep hill pretending they had broken legs.
Term 2 was a fun term as Stage 3 did Project Penguin with Balgowlah Boys. We had a choice to make a sculpture, movie or play. The majority of people chose sculpture and movie. Katia’s group made a movie and got to present and show their movie at Taronga Zoo. We also got to go to Taronga Zoo to see other schools sculptures, movies and other school’s made games. There were games on computers and there were also games with prizes. During the term we had a Robotics incursion. We coded small robots to do basic things like spin, move forward, move backwards and even dance. We also practiced our class dances for the upcoming dance concert. Our dance teacher Mrs Orrick taught Mr Dylan when he was in primary school. We had our dance ensembles go to the Sydney North Dance Festival and they danced to Michael Jackson. Our disco was a very memorable one was the theme was Disney and there was a huge variety of different costumes. I saw Woody from Toy Story, Snow White, Peter Pan, Princess Jasmine and Aladdin, the Little Mermaid and a lot of other great costumes. Near the end of the term we had our school cross country and Mali Lovell made it to the national level and came first!
Graduation Speech by Katia Bjorkmann
When term 3 started we couldn’t believe that we were half way through the year. We couldn’t wait to complete the athletics carnival where Phillip took out the win. It was also a great day to cheer on our classmates at the zone carnival where Olivia gained age champion and Mali made it past regional, past state and got a well deserving 2nd place at nationals. Band camp was also a memorable excursion for the band members where they completed a number of band activities along with band tutoring. But the highlight of term 3 was certainly Great Aussie Bush Camp. Many students stepped out of their comfort zones to complete a number of activities such as abseiling down a 12 metre wall, completing high ropes, canoeing in freezing water and everyone’s favourite activity the giant swing. We will never forget Cole’s Tarzan like scream as he plunged down the 12 metre swing. Another memorable moment was at the county fair where the Yr 5 & 6 students ran their own stalls much like the minifest. It was incredibly funny when the milkshake stand ran out of milk so instead gave out plain syrup. Later that term, Tom, Olivia, Logan, Miss Phillips and I went to Sydney Parliament House to have morning tea with the Premier Mr Mike Baird. It was a great experience especially after winning the speech competition and getting a free hot chocolate bought by a politician from the Greens party.
But we definitely saved the best for last with term 4. The senior band took a trip to Port Stephens for their band tour where they completed a number of workshops and performances. Minifest was also a favourite as we loved running stalls for years K-4. We are also very excited to wake up at 6.00am tomorrow morning ready to go to Jamberoo for an exciting, thrilling day.
As you can see by our impressive list of excursions and camps that we clearly had lots of fun this year but we couldn’t have had any of that fun without the supportive, kind and AWESOME teachers. So on behalf of year 6 I would like to thank all the staff, teachers and Mrs Lee for all their hard work, dedication and passion that they have put into this year to make it so much better.
Thank you!
