So much fun was had by year 5 & 6 students this week in Canberra. Many thanks to Mr Dylan and Mrs Blackband who led and co-ordinated the camp and Ms Taylor, Mrs Banham, Mrs Johnston, Mrs Ward, Ms Cash and Mrs Lee for accompanying the students. We appreciate you providing this opportunity for fun and learning.
School Choir Performance- Wyangan Concert- Friday 22 August
Tomorrow our school choir led by Mrs Mauger and Mrs McManus will perform as part of the Wyangan Concert at the Chatswood Concourse at 7.00pm. This concert is part of the Sydney North Public Schools Concert Band Program. The choir will be out all day tomorrow preparing for the evening performance.
The Sydney North Public Schools Band Program provides extension opportunities for talented musicians from public schools in Year 4 to Year 12. Amelia Lutze and Samuel Brook are also competing with SNPSBP Concert Band at the NSW State Band Championship this Sunday in Penrith. Congratulations.
We wish them all the best for their performance.
Learning and Support Team
The Learning and Support Team (LST) is made up of staff members with knowledge, expertise and interest in supporting students with special needs to access the school curriculum and do their best in their learning environment. The LST:
- supports teachers in identifying and responding to the additional learning needs of students;
- coordinates planning processes and resourcing for students with disability and additional learning and support needs;
- implements the supports required to build teacher capacity so that all students access quality learning;
- develops collaborative partnerships with the school, parents and carers, other professionals and support services.
Our LST includes Ms Stacey (Learning and Support Teacher), Mrs Philps (EAL/D Teacher), Mrs Birrell (Assistant Principal Curriculum & Instruction), Mrs Lee (Principal), Ms Mulloy (School Counsellor), and myself (Deputy Principal) in addition there is a representative classroom teacher from each stage as well. If a parent or teacher feels a student may have additional learning support needs, this is discussed and if relevant, the teacher completes a referral to the Learning and Support Team. Students who are referred to the Learning and Support Team are those who have learning or behaviour that is atypical and all avenues have been discussed and exhausted prior to referral.
Referrals are presented and discussed at fortnightly meetings where the team, along with other relevant staff;
- plan for and collect additional information relevant to the student;
- give recommendations for teachers of students who need adjustments;
- plan, implement and oversee available school based supports;
- assess the level of need and prioritise students/strategies based on available resources;
- connect families with external services and other support agencies where appropriate;
- review and monitor progress of referred students;
- evaluate implemented strategies based on a students’ learning and wellbeing outcomes.
Referrals to the learning and support team are accompanied by work samples or other assessment data. The discussion of each student at learning and support team meetings remains confidential.

Check-in assessment for Years 3, 4, 5 and 6
During Term 3 students will participate in the Check-in assessment.
The check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online literacy and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor student learning.
The assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. Students with disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment they would normally receive in the classroom.
- The assessment will be scheduled for our Year 3-6 students during weeks 6-9
- All students complete a reading assessment and a numeracy assessment. Year 6 students will also complete a writing assessment.
Students are asked to bring headphones that plug into a computer to enable them to hear audio during the assessment. These need to have a headphone jack to connect.
We thank you for your support.

Book Week Celebrations
Join us on an adventure to celebrate our love of reading and books. Check out these fun-filled adventures we have planned for next week!
Book Week Dress Up Day & Parade
On Monday we invite K-6 students to dress up as a favourite book character for our annual Book Week Dress Up Day. Parents and families are welcome to attend as we parade our costumes around the basketball court and oval straight after the morning 9.00am bell (weather permitting). Students are encouraged to bring along a copy of their chosen book to show their friends and to help us guess their character. However, a small picture or name-tag would be a great alternative.
The theme for Book Week this year is Book an Adventure. You are welcome to use the theme as inspiration to dress up but there is no need to stick to this theme. Costumes do not need to be elaborate or expensive - we just want you to have fun with your favourite book characters!
Visiting Illustrator - Nathaniel Eckstrom
We are looking forward to hosting illustrator, Nathaniel Eckstrom, on Thursday 28 August. Nathaniel has illustrated over 30 children’s books and his illustrations have earned notable accolades, with several books being shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year Awards. He will speak to our students about his illustration process and guide them through some drawing activities. Students are welcome to bring their own copies of Nathaniel’s books to have signed on the day.
Book Week Emoji Challenge
Our Book Week Emoji Challenge has been creating a lot of excitement. Copies of the challenge were sent home last week and spare copies can be picked up from the library or school office. Hint: all answers to the challenge are the CBCA shortlisted books and can be found on the back of the challenge entry form! The due date for the Book Week Emoji Challenge is this Friday 22 August. Please return entry forms to the gold box in the library for a chance to win a prize.
Bookworm Guessing Competition
We are also holding a Bookworm Guessing Competition in the library. All you need to do is bring a library bag and borrow a book to be able to take a guess! The student/s who guess the number of bookworms in the jar will get to keep the bookworms - yummy!
