Principal’s Report – Term 2 Week 3
Mother’s Day Stall - Thank you
Thank you to Amy Hansen and Karen Murgatroyd and their team of kindergarten helpers for the fabulous Mother’s Day stall last Friday. It is always a lovely fundraiser for the school, and the students just love to go shopping for their mums at the school stall. This year we raised $5,032 from the stall and $4,152.07 from the raffle.
It was great having so many volunteers to run the stall, set up and pack up. Even with only 3 kindergarten classes this year we had so many enthusiastic volunteers. A great result. Thanks also to Barry for helping with the set up, and Mrs Oscroft for organising the visits from classes. All money raised will go towards the P&C spending priorities for the year including science resources, PSSA jerseys, laptops and resources for the Garden Club.
Farewell Greg Wetzler - IT Support
Next week we will farewell our IT guy Greg Wetzler. Greg has serviced our laptops and iPads for over 10 years and supported teachers and students with the implementation of 1:1 devices during the transition to the new school. Greg is retiring from the role and will be greatly missed by all at Manly Vale Public School. We wish him and his wife Bev, all the best for their overseas holiday, and future in retirement. Thank you, Greg!
We welcome Zayn from Xenotech who will be relieving for Greg until the end of the year.
Congratulations Chess Club
Last Friday our Manly Vale B team represented our school in an interschool chess competition. Their first game was against Oxford Falls Grammar. It was wonderful to receive 2 wins out of 4 games against seeded opposition players. Congratulations to all the players on a great start to the season. Thank you to Andres Prada (dad of Nicolas) and his team of parents and grandparents, for organising this competition on Friday afternoons.
National Road Safety Week
This week is National Road Safety week. Tomorrow is National Walk Safely to School Day. It is important to reflect upon our own behaviour when it comes to keeping our school students and community safe. Last week it was pointed out to the school the amount of parents parking illegally during the drop off and pick up times. Parents were also seen to be getting their children out of the car from the traffic side rather than the curb side of their parked car. This is very dangerous especially on the bends of Gibbs and Sunshine Street. Please make sure that children exit the car on the footpath side not the traffic side of the car.
The pedestrian crossing must be always used during these drop off and pick up times. Modelling safe pedestrian behaviour is so important around a school. Please walk the extra few steps to cross the road on the crossing, rather than from the bend where Gibbs and Sunshine Street meet.
National Walk Safely to School Day - Friday 16 May
Tomorrow the executive staff will be at the front gate to greet our students, and issue tattoos and stickers for safe pedestrian behaviour and rewarding those students who have walked to school. Please try and try to walk to school tomorrow and revise the road rules.
This day is a great opportunity for families to walk to school together and have conversations about being a safe road user.
Here are some tips to help make walking to school a regular part of your routine:
- Plan your route: Take some time to plan the safest and most convenient route to walk to school. Consider pedestrian crossings, footpaths, and traffic lights.
- Set a schedule: Decide on the days and times you’ll walk to school each week. Consistency is key to forming a new habit. Try to stick to your schedule as much as possible.
- Safety First: ALWAYS hold your child’s hand until they are at least 8 years old. Closely supervise them until they are at least 10 years old.
- ALWAYS hold your child’s hand when on the footpath, when crossing the road or when in a car park
- Teach your child about being a safe pedestrian: this includes watching out for driveways, walking facing traffic when there are no footpaths and always, Stop, Look, Listen, Think, every time you cross the road.
- Avoid distractions: Set a good example by putting your phone away. Focus on your surroundings. I f you need to use your phone, stop in a safe place.
- Make it fun: Keep the walks enjoyable by talking about what you see and about your day. This can help make the time go quickly and make walking to school something your child looks forward to.
- Join Forces: Coordinate with other families in your neighbourhood to walk to school together. Not only does this make it more fun for the kids, but it also provides additional safety in numbers.
- Celebrate achievements: Celebrate achievements along the way to keep motivation high. Whether it’s reaching a certain number of walks or noticing improvements in fitness, acknowledging progress can help reinforce the habit.
- Practise, Practise, Practise: the more supervised pedestrian experiences your child can get the better, so they will be ready to safely travel by themselves when they are older.
- Walk Safely to School Day can be the start of a new routine.

Online Guardians - Tuesday 27 May
An email went out last week asking for permission for our years 3-6 students to attend digital and cyber safety workshops on Tuesday 27 May.
The session times are:
Stage 2 (years 3 & 4) 11.30am - 12.30pm
Stage 3 (years 5 & 6) 2.00pm – 3.00pm
Parents workshop (adults only) 6.00pm-7.00pm
Unfortunately, these workshops clash with the Zone Cross Country Carnival. We are unable to change the date. The parent workshop is for parents only, as the content is not appropriate for the students. We are sorry that there is a clash which can not be avoided as the carnival had to be changed after the booking was made. Parents are welcome to attend the workshop even if their child does not attend their session due to carnival commitments.

Cross country ribbons will be given out to students on Friday 23 May at 9.00am in a special assembly, under the K-2 COLA.

NSW Public Schools Student Survey Year 3-6
In Term 2, we are offering our students the opportunity to participate in the NSW Public Schools Student Survey. The survey gives students the chance to share their thoughts and feelings about life at school, including questions about their engagement, learning experiences and wellbeing at school.
Hearing directly from our students will help us understand what’s working well and where improvements can be made to our school. The survey is confidential, takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and will be conducted online during school hours.
Participation is voluntary. If you prefer your child not to participate, please complete the opt-out consent form, which will be sent home, and return it to the school. Further information about the survey is available at:
If you do not want your child to participate in this survey, please complete the form below and return it to the office by Monday 19 May.

Road Safety Week – 11 May to 18 May
NRSW is an initiative of Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group. This week-long activation is supported by Transport for NSW (Transport).
The purpose of NRSW is to raise awareness about the importance of road safety in NSW and in turn reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities on our roads.
Here are a few helpful reminders. Please be safe on our roads.

Mother’s Day Fundraiser 2025
Thank you to all the school parents for getting behind and supporting the first fundraiser of the year. Thank you particularly to the kindergarten parent volunteers who sorted the gifts on Thursday and run the stall last Friday. All students enjoyed selecting a special gift for their mums. Overall combined money raised from the raffle & stall was approx. $9,200, what a great result.
We would especially like to thank the very kind local businesses who supported the raffle.

6D's STEM Challenge Day!
This week, 6D took part in a special Science Day packed with innovation and imagination! Students chose between two exciting STEM challenges: “Design a Working Amusement Park Ride!” or “Light Up the Town!” Both challenges required students to build working electrical circuits and use supermarket paper bags as their main construction material. Whether lighting up a miniature town or powering parts of an amusement ride, students worked creatively and collaboratively to problem-solve, design and bring their imaginative ideas to life!

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking
On Friday, the first week of term 2, ten stage 3 students competed at the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition in the school finals. The adjudicators, teachers, parents and students were impressed with the high standard of the presentation skills and content of the speeches.
The competition comprises two elements: the prepared speech and the impromptu speech. Historically, the impromptu speech showcases exceptional speakers who demonstrate the ability to think on their feet and deliver engaging speeches.
We are pleased to announce that the winners of the Stage 3 competition are:
Marlowe McInnes from 5B and Evelyn Nicol from 6D.
The runner-up places were awarded to Zoe Chakravarty and Darcy Richmond, both from 5B.
The Arts Unit, which organises the competition, allows two winners to progress to the next stage, not one, as it was mistakenly communicated during the school finals.
Mrs Banham and Mrs Mauger would like to congratulate all participants and wish the winners good luck in the next stage of the competition.
