A wonderful way to start the week with our annual Cross-Country carnival. The ribbons for the first 6 places in each age race will be given out on Friday 23 May (week 4) at 9.00am under the K-2 COLA. These students will go on to represent our school at zone level.

This is always an exciting day for all students. The Mother’s Day stall raffle will close on Thursday 8 May, and they will be drawn on Thursday night. Prizes can be collected from the school office from Friday. Vouchers and easy to carry prizes can be sent home with the students.
Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums from Manly Vale Public School.

Happy 70th Birthday Manly Vale Public School
Our school turns 70 this year. It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since we celebrated the school’s 60th birthday. Now a completely new school but still with strong connection to our bushland and community, it is time to celebrate another great birthday! The school will hold some celebrations in Term 3 around Open day to mark this significant birthday and host some school tours of the new site. If any community members wish to be a part of an organising committee to organise some external event or catch up, please contact the school.
National Road Safety Week- 12 May- 16 May (week 3)
Next week we will be acknowledging National Road Safety week. This week is a wonderful time to reinforce safe travel to and from school when walking, riding, or catching the bus. As parents we should always be modelling safe road safety practices and reinforcing the road rules to our children.
Classes will discuss safe road practices with the week finishing on the “National Walk Safely to School Day,” on Friday 16 May. Try and use this day to walk or ride safely to school with your children and go over the road rules and safe pedestrian guidelines. Staff will greet students at the gate with stickers and tattoos as they arrive at school.
Chess Club- Competition starts Friday 9 May
This Friday afternoon, our school Chess team will play Oxford Falls Grammar and Newport Public School, in the first round of the Interschool Chess competition. Good luck to both our teams. Thank you, Mr Andres Prada, (Nicolas’ dad -year 2) for organising the teams and coordinating this experience for our keen chess players.
Online Guardians- Tuesday 27 May- Student and Parent Workshops
In week 5 of this term, we have booked the Online Guardian team to come to the school and run workshops for year 3-6 students on awareness and responsible use of online platforms, games and networks. The presenter is a police officer of 20 years’ experience working with students, children at risk and young offenders. He prepares students and parents through his workshops, with effective tools and strategies relating to a variety of adolescent development issues.
The digital world has a significant impact on the development of children. Parents and carers play a critical role in understanding the online world and supporting our children in this space. The P&C has covered the cost of these workshops and the parent information afternoon/evening seeing it as a priority for our community. A permission note will be sent home next week along with the opportunity for all parents (K-6) to register for the afternoon/evening sessions. We intend on running these workshops every second year for those who are unable to attend this time.
Please look out for the permission note and registration information in your emails.

School Refusal Webinar- Wednesday 14 May – 7.00pm
If you are having problems getting your child to school, you may find the following webinar helpful. Feel free to book in for the online seminar next week to get some tricks and tips as to how to best manage this situation.

MiniLit and Macqlit
Minilit is an early intervention program, standing for “Meeting Initial Needs in Literacy” designed to support young readers particularly in year 1. It is a systematic, explicit program delivered in small groups, focusing on key literacy skills like phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
MacqLit provides teachers with comprehensive sequence of lessons that includes effective reading instruction. Students receiving this program will be tutored 3 days a week by a teacher’s aide or the Learning and Support Teacher Ms Stacey.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on Schools Students with Disability
Our school is participating in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (Data Collection). This Data Collection is taking place in government, Catholic and Independent schools across Australia and will provide valuable information about supports required for a broad group of students. It will enable Australian and State governments to better target support and resources in schools and this in turn will help schools give students with disabilities the support they require.
The Data Collection is not limited to students with diagnosed disabilities. It uses a very broad definition of disability, taken from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, which describe a broad range of health and learning conditions for which schools are required to provide ‘reasonable adjustments’ to support students to participate on the same basis as other students.

If you have any questions about the enrolment process, the amazing office staff will be only too happy to answer your enquiries.

NSW Public Schools Student Survey Year 3-6
In Term 2, we are offering our students the opportunity to participate in the NSW Public Schools Student Survey. The survey gives students the chance to share their thoughts and feelings about life at school, including questions about their engagement, learning experiences and wellbeing at school.
Hearing directly from our students will help us understand what’s working well and where improvements can be made to our school. The survey is confidential, takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and will be conducted online during school hours.
Participation is voluntary. If you prefer your child not to participate, please complete the opt-out consent form, which will be sent home, and return it to the school. Further information about the survey is available at
If you do not want your child to participate in this survey, please complete the form below and return it to the office by Monday 19 May.
I hope you all have peaceful and happy week.

Winter PSSA Manly Zone Competition
In terms 2 & 3, our school will once again be participating in the Winter PSSA Manly Zone Competition. As always, it is fantastic to see large numbers of students signing up for every sport. Teachers are faced with the difficult task of putting these teams together. Teachers do their absolute best to give every student the opportunity to impress and be selected. Trials were held over the last three weeks of term 1.
We would love to take every student who trialled for PSSA however, we are limited to take a certain number of students in each sport. We ask that students and parents are understanding of the decision made by teachers. Teachers will not be responding to requests to add students to teams or to change decisions. Decisions on teams are final.
Along with this, please be advised of the following:
Trials were held over three weeks at the end of last term, to allow for students to be seen multiple times and to accommodate students who may have been absent due to illness on one of the trial dates.
The great news for students who do not attend PSSA on a Friday is that they will be participating in our school sport programs. Each term we book external providers who come to the school and run exciting competitions and fun skill sessions.

Library News
Mindfulness May
Things in the library are getting very Zen with Mindfulness May. At lunchtimes we will be offering years 1-6 the opportunity to practice Yoga or meditation using online guided programs. Mindfulness colouring will also be available, and as always, we have a plethora of beautiful books to explore. What better way to practice mindfulness than to read a book!
“Reading helps to reduce stress and anxiety and takes your mind away from other things happening in your environment. Cultivating a quiet space to focus and be present in the moment promotes mindfulness. Reading and mindfulness can overlap in terms of emotion regulation, stress and the benefits on the brain.”
Mindful Reading and Mental Health, Homa Warren, 2024.

Soccer six-a-side
Football SSG is one of the Northern Beaches biggest summer sporting organisations. We organise six-a-side football (soccer) competitions at Curl Curl and Warriewood each Spring from mid-September to mid-December. Last year we had more than 3,600 players involved!
Our program provides a safe, fun and inclusive environment for players of all ages to develop their sporting prowess, no matter what their ability. Our rules have been written very specifically to help players improve individually and as a team which, in turn, builds confidence and fosters enjoyment and camaraderie.
We will commence accepting registrations for our Spring 2025 season on 1st July, so we’d ideally like to quickly understand the opportunities so that we can build awareness through May and June.
